The Best Remodeled Basement Wall Products

Most basement finishing companies use products that have been hastily produced, poorly researched, or make misleading claims. This article covers the questions you should ask when selecting a basement wall product. Also included is a great product comparison chart!

As housing costs slump and more and more people are finishing their basements instead of selling their homes, companies are designing their own basement remodeling wall panels. Unfortunately, many of these companies have products that have been hastily produced, poorly researched, or make misleading claims to the effectiveness of their final product. Before you make a final decision on which basement finishing products you want, ask yourself these five questions:

1. Is this basement wall product water resistant?

A basement water leak at some point isn’t a matter of how, it’s a matter of when. With all the pipes, sinks, and toilets in the house along with the water heater, washing machine, and water storage tank, something is definitely going to leak.

Additionally, rain and ground water can leak through foundation wall cracks in the walls or floor as well as through the foundation wall-floor joint.

2. Will my basement wall product resist mold?

Even when your basement is not leaking, water can still come through the porous concrete, stone, or tile foundation walls because of hydrostatic pressure. This moisture will collect behind and under your finished basement wall product. If it has any organic material, this material is going to grow mold. Fiberglass, drywall, wood, and most other building materials used for basement walls have at least some organic material. Mold and dust mites growing on the organic material will release spores and fecal material in the air that will travel throughout the house and are two of the top allergens in a home.

3. How durable will my walls be?

Once you finish your basement, you’re going to want to use it. This means that you may want pictures, shelves, cabinets, a plasma TV, a mirror, a wine rack, or any number of other items mounted on the walls. You’re going to want a strong, reliable wall that can hold up. Additionally, it’s important to have basement walls that can handle daily wear and tear without breaking, scratching, or becoming damaged. A product that washes easily is also important- especially if children and pets will be in the room. A good test to see if your wall is going to be able to handle stains is to draw a pencil line on a sample. If it can be easily removed, then you should be able to wash most stains from the wall. Beware of absorbent wall materials- if it absorbs moisture easily, it will also absorb spills and other liquids.

4. How much insulation does the wall product have?

In Canada and northern United States , a minimum insulation rating of R-13 is being written into local building codes. Whether or not this is required in your area, it’s a good idea to add to the energy efficiency of the home by adding effective insulation to your walls. Hard foam insulation will add to the strength of the wall product overall, and if it also features a hardboard ceramic panel, then you will be able to mount heavy objects on the wall without the need to find a stud. Be sure that if you insulate your wall that it’s completely covered with insulation around the entire perimeter, or your protection will have a hole for heat to pour out.

5. How well can my basement walls keep sound out?

If you plan on making noise in your basement, you’re going to want a wall product that can soundproof your home. Many products do little to keep sound out, and some products even help it travel around the house! Hardboard products tend to reflect sound back when it strikes them, making them a poor sound absorber but a strong sound barrier. Wall panels with soft insulation and a cloth covering absorb sound well and are effective at keeping a room quiet and peaceful.

From this chart, you can see that wood paneling and any type of drywall (even mold-resistant drywall, whose warranty generally runs from 6 months to 3 years) are ineffective materials for basement finishing. Soft insulation paneling is a better material to use, with an average of R-11 insulation and strong soundproofing qualities, but it’s unfortunately among the least durable and cleanable of the products, and mold and moisture can still damage it fairly easily. Additionally, its spongelike insulation soaks up moisture very quickly, making it very absorbent for unwanted spills and liquids. Wood paneling is more resistant to spills and liquids, but it can swell with water, causing it to warp, buckle, rot, and grow mold. Drywall deals with moisture poorly as well, and when it gets wet, it will generally need to be replaced.

While hard-board insulation wall panels do reflect sound, they have the most advantages of all basement finishing wall products. Basement wall panels like Total Basement Finishing’s EverLast Wall Panels have a 50 year warranty against mold and are durable enough to have a 684 pound shear rating without studs. A half inch drywall board using nylon wall drills has a 17.5 pound safe shear rating, and most soft insulation wall panels can hold no more than ten pounds! Hard-board wall panels with dense foam insulation can still act as a sound barrier and will not allow sounds to pass through, and they’re much more durable than any other material when it comes to impact damage. A quality dense foam insulation product will easily meet the required R-13 insulation rating, ensuring that the materials will be code-compliant for many years to come. Additionally, hard-foam insulation and paneling that’s properly installed will often have a Class A fireproofing rating, making your home safer than ever!

Contractor Scammed while Looking for Work: Don’t be a Victim

As a contractor, you have to take necessary precautions to avoid being scammed over the internet.

Although you would want to find that job already, it is important that you get to check out the safety and security of job ads posted on the web.

With the economy spiraling down the drain and unemployment rate going up, along with it is the rise in numbers of identity thieves. Because of the growth of individuals losing their jobs lately, many unwanted persons want to take advantage of the desperation of these job seekers.

Take for example that news about a certain person, in the hopes of finding a job over the internet; he caught himself losing two $100 bills from his account without him knowing. This happened right after he followed instructions on a job listing ad on how they’d be able to hire them or give them work tasks and be paid home based. At some point, the supposed poster required the candidate to submit vital information such as his driver’s license number, social security number, his address, and almost his entire world for the sake of a should have been background check.

The ad post also mentioned that by doing so, he’d be notified about his work 48 hours after. But days had passed without any word from the said company. He then noticed the different comments under the said job posting. Messages from other contractors like him wrote there something like it being a scam.Then someone suggested that whoever had followed the said instructions should check their bank account.

And so this certain contractor did, and that’s when he found out about the money that he had been losing slowly without his idea. Without knowing what to do next, the said contractor victim closed his debit card account immediately and a fraud investigation for the said website owner was requested. Out of desperation, we all get to jump on to whatever comes our way that we find would be helpful.

However, in that rush we tend to ignore the safety precautions that we should be following. Amidst the worry and panic, one should always remember to keep your head straight especially when it’s about your security. Important information that shouldn’t be shared without proper papers should be kept private. If you are asked for a background check, you should also inquire about who will do the background check and the search should be legal, and properly guided by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

The next thing to consider is to try and do background search as well on your prospected employer or company. You have the right to know whether the company and employer, or the job poster flyer is legit or not. This will guarantee that you’re not falling in some phishing job post, or identity theft and fraud. By taking in all these precautionary measures, you’ll be assured the security that is more important than losing everything just because you thought you’d finally have a job.

Remember that you need to be able to work to earn enough for a living, not lose it on the way there. Not caring about what you’re doing would only lead you to more trouble, and believe me; you wouldn’t want to have that. Not now when life and work is becoming synonymous to survival. Safety and security still outranks risking your identity.

Tips for Choosing a Pressure Washing Contractor

If you are looking for a quick and thorough way to clean your house’s exterior, consider pressure washing.

Pressure washing, concrete cleaning is best left in the hands of a professional. However, a pressure washing job done incorrectly or by an unqualified pressure washing contractor can cause damage to your home or property. The damage can be costly.

Below are a few pointers that can help you in your search for a pressure washing contractor that will get the job done correctly. There are also additional tips for dealing with the contractor you choose while the job is ongoing and when it is done.

1. Become Educated. It pays to have a clear understanding of what is involved in pressure washing. Be aware that exterior damage can possibly occur with pressure washing. 6. Ask for a Demo. You will find a few pressure washing contractors actually agreeing to give you a demo because doing one can be both time consuming and difficult to stage. Many contractors will deny demonstration requests and insist that the client be available at the initial stage of the project. This practice is not uncommon. Contractors will instead request that you be around when the job starts. If for any reason you are unhappy with how the work is going, do not hesitate to let the contractor know about your concerns.

7. Get Estimates in Writing. An estimate on paper is extremely important for pressure washing contractor jobs. These estimates help to protect both you and the contractor. Make sure that the written estimate details specifications of the service, final project expectations and total expenses in work, labor and materials.

8. Obtain References. Obtaining references is important. Make sure that referrals are for pressure washing projects and not for other contracted services such as deck cleaning or vinyl siding cleaning. Make sure to use the references once the contractor has provided them to you. Ask questions in regards to the quality of the work such as project outcomes, workmanship and professionalism.

9. Guarantee and Financing Policies. Read over the financing or billing policies and customer guarantee or satisfaction papers. Make sure that you understand policies in regards to payment schedules and deposits. What type of satisfaction and guarantee does the contractor offer on the finished project?

Choosing a Contractor for Your Custom Home

When building a custom home, the most important factor is choosing the right contractor. This article covers important issues when selection a builder.

If you have not been able to find the perfect house on the market and you decide to build on a vacant lot, you’ll be faced with a very important decision - choosing a contractor. Your contractor is someone you are going to have an ongoing relationship with for about 12 months. There will be some bumps in the road as the process unfolds; and you must have an open and frequent line of communication and share a common goal and vision that goes beyond the blueprints for your new home. Start your search by asking your real estate agent for a few referrals. He or she will have local knowledge about area contractors, their reputation and the quality of their work. Once you have some direction, here are a few basic tips to help choose a builder and keep your project on track:

Get references - and don’t hire a contractor until you have visited 2 or 3 other houses completed by the builder. Ideally, get the address of every house the builder has built in the last 2 or 3 years and contact several of the owners randomly. Don’t expect a perfect report card. Building a house is tough business and it is almost impossible to make a homeowner happy at every turn. Ask what each owner might have done differently if they could build the house all over again.

Pick a day and time to meet with your contractor each week and in person. Don’t ever miss this meeting - it will keep the project on track, keep costs and changes to a minimum and establish a great working relationship. Make sure that all "change orders" are reviewed and signed during the meeting. Above all, make sure that your builder agrees in writing to the weekly meeting in your contract.

Visit the contractor’s other working job sites to make sure that they run a tight ship. Specifically, look to see if unused materials are organized and protected from the weather. Make sure that there is some evidence of a temporary workspace to review plans. Insure that garbage and construction waste is routinely removed from the job site. Also, investigate to make certain that work begins and ends each day on a regular schedule - same time, every day.

Make it clear to your contractor that you expect progress every day of every week. Your money is being used to build a house that you cannot move into until it is completed. A day of inactivity at the site costs you money and you deserve progress in exchange for that money.

Don’t expect your builder to have a crystal ball. Do expect some minor deviations from what is planned. You will have fewer surprises cost-wise if you take the time to make sure that every possible item is included in the construction price. Before making a commitment to use any builder, make sure you have a comprehensive list of what is included in the price and what is not included in the price. If you add something extra in mid-stream, that will result in additional time and expense to the builder. Don’t expect changes for free.

Building a house can be a great experience. Chances are, if you take this advice, you will move into your new house on time, within budget and as a happy customer. The builder will be happier at the end also.

12 Questions To Ask Before Hiring A Lawn Contractor

Twelve basic questions to ask when hiring a lawn care contractor. Consider the answers to all of these questions when comparing lawn services - the decision is not always about price.

 

12 Questions To Ask Before Hiring A Lawn Contractor

What makes your service different from your competitor?
This is an open-ended question that can be asked for a couple of reasons. First, does the contractor understand his own services. Second, if he’s been around for some time, he will also understand his competitor’s services. I like this question not just for the factual answer but also to see the spirit of how it is answered. The contractor should be able to point out the benefits of his own service instead of bad mouthing his competition.

Do you have customer references I can call?
Unless the contractor is new, they should have some readily available references that you can either call or drive by. It is not unusual for a contractor to be hesitant to give out phone numbers of his customers, to protect their privacy. However, they should be able to give you the street address of customers that you can simple drive by and see the quality of their lawn. Most contractors are going to send you to see their "best" lawns, so the question has value in the fact that they are willing to give you the information.

How many years have you been in business?
The answer to this question depends on your personal preference. You may want an established company. However, lawn work is often a young persons business, so hiring someone who is eager to get started and make a name for himself may not be bad.

Do you have insurance?
This is simple - do not hire someone unless they can show you a certificate of insurance.

Are all your employees licensed?
Each state has it’s own licensing requirements. All states require a license of someone who is hired to apply herbicides and pesticides to other person’s property. In general, the license is to be carried by the person. They should be able to show you an up to date license. Some states do not require a license if the products used are organic.

What products do you put on the lawn?
This is another open-ended question. The answer will let you know if the person understands his own products. There are always timing and weather issues for lawn care products. If the contractor is stumbling through the answer you should probably dig deeper: when do you apply pre-emergent; how often do you apply post-emergent weed control; do you use high nitrogen fertilizer; do you use a complete fertilizer (one that contains nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) or an incomplete fertilizer; what effect do you products have on the root system and the soil properties, etc. You need to pin them down on this question. It’s your environment they are treating and you should know the warnings, value, and consequences of anything they use.

Are there any restrictions on using the lawn after an application?
You will need to know any restrictions on using the lawn following an application. Many applications require that you, your kids, your pets, etc. remain off the lawn for up to two days. If you have a sprinkler system, you may need to turn it off for a couple of days.

How often do you treat the lawn?
The general answer to this question is about every six weeks. What you want to discern is whether they come every six weeks because they have a tight schedule and that’s what works for them OR they vary the time increment to come at a time that is best for your lawn based on timing, rainfall, air temperature, etc.

Is your service guaranteed?
Contractors don’t like this question and with good reason. They are working at the mercy of Mother Nature and it’s hard to guarantee results when they cannot control the weather. What the contractor can guarantee is timely applications, timely control of most weeds, correction of the pH value of the soil, etc. If you chose to ask this question, you may want to let them off the hook by stating "under normal weather conditions".

Do you verify your employees using background checks?
My comment to this question is it’s better to be overly cautious. The typical time for lawn applications is summer. This is a time when kids are home from school and you know kids are always curious when someone new comes to their home. This is also a time when you have windows open to let the fresh air in. You need to know who is on your property!

How much is your service - what does it include - what does it not include?
Obviously you need to know the cost of the service. You should also inquire about a prepayment discount. In the lawn industry there are a number of add-on services and you should understand what is included and what will be an extra charge. Some common add-on services/charges are: pH (lime/sulfur), grub control, call back charges, and seeding. You can pick and choose which of these services you want, but have the contractor substantiate the charges such as: what is the pH of the soil, have them show you the grubs, etc.

What improvement can I expect to see in 3 months, 6 months, 1 year?
Use this question so that there is a mutual understanding of expectations. Companies that use synthetic fertilizer and herbicides will have a much faster improvement over companies that use organic fertilizer and IPM procedures. Knowing what to expect will alleviate frustration on both sides.
